It’s baseball season and on Sunday July 13th the Astros are taking on the Boston Red Sox at Minute Maid Park. Baseball players know the importance of doing exercise for balance, and you should too. If you like going to the games to cheer on the Astros, you know how navigating the stands can present a few problems. Having good balance can make your life easier in so many ways.
Some people struggle with having good balance, especially those who are up in years. Having good balance is essential to maintaining a good quality of life as you age. It means having control over your own body while you are standing still or moving around. It helps you walk without feeling like you’re going to fall, get up from a seated position, and climb stairs without stumbling. It can also help you feel strong, motivated, and independent. Everyone should practice balance exercises daily to help keep themselves in good physical shape.
There are a few simple stretches you can do to help improve your balance. Some people find that tai chi or yoga may help them achieve their balance goals. Others make do using only a chair or a wall. You can practice standing on one foot using only a chair for support or you can do heel-to-toe walks. You can also do what is called a “balance walk” which combines these two exercises—walking heel-to-toe while pausing in the middle with your leg up. To increase the intensity of these exercises, try doing them with your eyes closed, but always make sure you have a spotter nearby.
