Looking for something that combines culture and the chance to get out and walk around? Try the guided walk at the Asia Society Texas Center in Houston at 1:00 PM on Saturday, Dec. 7. It’s your chance to see the first free-standing structure in the USA designed by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi. If you stay for the 2:00 PM Art Tour, plan to be on your feet for a couple of hours exploring the textile industry in places like Laos, the Philippines, and East Timor.
Walking around for two hours feasting your eyes and ears on architecture and art can be a lot of fun – as long as your feet don’t hurt! Choose comfortable walking shoes, and you’ll be sure to enjoy the afternoon. Here are some tips to finding the right shoes for you.
Start by trying on several pairs of shoes, preferably in the late afternoon or evening, as your feet typically swell a little during the day. Wear the socks you will wear when you are walking, and make sure the heels don’t slip and there’s enough room for your toes to wiggle. Check that they support your arch correctly, too, and take your inserts or custom orthotics along to confirm that they will work in the new shoes. Ask the trained shoe professional about the structure of the shoe and whether it is designed for walking. Finally, try your new footwear around the house (on carpet only) to make sure they will work for your feet.
