The feet are a complex system of bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. On a daily basis, we ask a lot of our feet, so wearing the proper footwear doesn’t seem like too much to ask. However, many of us grab the first pair of shoes that we see, and our feet are sent out into the world without adequate foot support. Imagine former Houston Astros player Craig Biggio showing up to play in his favorite pair of running shoes!
Selecting the proper footwear for physical activity is imperative for good foot health. Cleats, court shoes, running shoes, and tennis shoes all serve different purposes. Depending on your favorite workout, you may need more control, stability, or support. For example, a running shoe needs to allow for flexibility as it moves with the foot, while a shoe designed for basketball will be more rigid to support quick movements.
Your feet will let you know quickly if you have made a poor shoe selection. Painful skin irritation such as blisters may be the first sign that something has gone wrong. A jammed toe, or agitation of a hammertoe or bunion will also cause discomfort. Bunions can be especially painful, and the bony protrusion requires a wide toe box.
