The condition “athlete’s foot” was so aptly named due to the increased risk of infection that athletes face. However, anyone can acquire this condition under the right circumstances. People who allow their sock and shoes to remain damp or who walk around barefoot in public locker rooms and at pools are most commonly afflicted. The infection is highly contagious and so anyone can acquire it by borrowing shoes, towels, and nail clippers from people with this problem. Those with diabetes, cancer, and weakened immune systems are much more likely to develop this condition. Athlete’s foot is also more common as people age and is seen more often in men than women.
