While you may have heard about the many damaging effects that can come with the development of flat feet, you may be wondering how you can know if you have this condition. Luckily there is a very simple test to find out what kind of arches you have. The “wet test” is a well-tested and simple method of determining arch types. A patient only needs to dip their foot in a shallow body of water and place their damp foot onto a dry surface that will show their footprint. Paper bags, heavy paper, and cement will all work fine.
A normal foot will show about half of the footprint in the arch area; this type of foot absorbs shock well and provides the foot with a fair amount of stability. If the entire foot is seen with the wet test, then the patient most likely has flat feet. Such patients often suffer from conditions related to overpronation. The final foot type, a high arch, will be indicated by a print that only shows that ball and heel of the foot well. People with high arches can’t absorb shock to the feet very well and often need extra cushioning in their footwear.
While this test allows patients to get an insight into their foot type, only a professional diagnosis from Dr. Marco Vargas can unveil the subtle intricacies of problems in your foot health. Schedule an appointment online or call our Sugar Land office at 888-784-5335.
