foot specialists houston txMany of us may scale back on exercise during the winter, but spring is right around the corner! It’s time to head back outside, enjoy more sports, and get moving! If you’ve been working out in the gym over the winter, it’s important that you get a good new pair of shoes before hitting the hiking trails or going for a run outdoors. Our foot specialists in Houston, TX, give some recommendations below.

Benefits of Outdoor Exercise

Hiking, running outdoors, and doing outdoor sports are all exciting ways to get your daily exercise in. You can experience new sights, explore new terrain, and have a more memorable workout with friends. Spring also brings fresh air and sunlight to get you out of the winter groove and into a new exercise routine!

Importance of New Shoes

It’s incredibly important to have new shoes if you’re going to transition back into outdoor exercise. Exercise shoes wear out over time, even if you only use them indoors. Be sure to check the flexibility of the arch—if it’s too floppy or if it bends when you twist it, it’s time for a new pair. Having supportive shoes is critical to prevent foot and leg injuries when working out.

Picking New Exercise Shoes

If you have a high arch or a low arch, make sure that you buy a properly fitted shoe for your foot type. If your shoes don’t fit properly and support your arch, you can cause damage to your foot over time. Issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and bunions can develop if your shoes are too tight, long, or loose in the arches. Check with our podiatrist if you are unsure of your foot type.

houston tx podiatristsFoot pain in children is very common and can be easily diagnosed and treated by our podiatrist. Since kids are active and are often involved in sports, they are susceptible to injury. Our Houston, TX, podiatrists explain what to look out for, common causes, and how to treat your child’s foot pain.

Things To Look Out For

Complaints are the most obvious sign that something is wrong. If your child complains of heel or foot pain, it is critical to have them evaluated by our podiatrist. Be aware of other symptoms as well, such as limping or toe-walking.

Common Causes

If your child is involved in sports or other athletic activities, they are at a higher risk for foot injuries. Additionally, there are youth-specific problems to look out for. Keep these specific foot problems in mind:

  • Calcaneal apophysitis. This is a disorder that occurs in children between 8 and 14 years old. It causes inflammation of the heel’s growth plate and the pain is worsened by walking. It is caused by the overuse of the foot, specifically running on hard surfaces. Children involved in basketball or soccer are especially prone to this injury.
  • Achilles tendonitis. Generally caused by a sudden increase in activity, such as the beginning of sports season, Achilles tendonitis leads to heel pain, inflammation, and difficulty walking.
  • Plantar fasciitis. This condition is a result of overstretching the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot. It causes pain in the heel and the bottom of the foot. Generally, the pain is worse in the morning and gets better throughout the day.

Treatments And Checkups

You can start treating your child’s foot problem at home with rest, ice, and compression. If the pain persists or gets worse, call our podiatrist to schedule an appointment. For prevention, ensure that your child has quality supportive shoes to avoid injuries in the future. Stretching before sports is also a great measure to warm the muscles up prior to activity. Additionally, regular checkups are essential for children that are active or have sustained prior foot injuries.

ankle doctor pasadena txMost people have experienced sweaty feet at some point in their lifetime. It can be annoying and inconvenient, but it can also cause foot problems if there’s an underlying cause or if the sweating is extreme! If you suffer from sweaty feet, our ankle doctor in Pasadena, TX, wants to share some tips with you.

Causes of Sweaty Feet

Most people associate sweaty feet with exercise or simply being active in the heat. While this is true, sometimes people can have problems with sweaty feet in the winter due to overly warm boots with poor ventilation or very thick socks.

Additionally, some people just naturally have sweaty feet due to overactive sweat glands, also known as hyperhidrosis. This affects the feet as well as the hands, and can be very inconvenient and cause problems with foot health for the sufferer.

Complications of Sweaty Feet

Sweaty feet contribute to the growth of foot fungus, the development of fungal nails, and athlete’s foot. These conditions are characterized by discomfort, itching, and rash. They can lead to further complications, such as foot pain, thickened toenails, and even open sores and infection. It’s critical to prevent sweat and bacteria buildup to stop these conditions from developing.

Treatments and Prevention

Here are a few simple steps to take care of sweaty feet at home:

  • Wash your feet every day with an antifungal soap to remove any fungus-causing bacteria and excess sweat.
  • Use antifungal powder and antiperspirants, especially in the summer or when exercising. For people with hyperhidrosis, antiperspirants are absolutely essential to prevent sweating and preserve foot health. You can purchase these over-the-counter.
  • Wear good quality socks and shoes with ventilation to ensure your feet can breathe and cool off!

If you have any symptoms of foot fungus, athlete’s foot, or just want more advice on treatments for sweaty feet, our podiatrist is more than happy to help.

foot doctor houston txIt happens to many people–you get new shoes, or neglect to wear socks, and a painful blister forms on your heel or other parts of your foot. When you have a blister, it may be tempting to pop it. However, this can cause more pain and worsen your problem! The body will naturally reabsorb the blister and will gradually go away on its own. If necessary, you can also safely drain the fluid without popping it. Our foot doctor in Houston, TX, explains what to do when caring for a blister.

Why Blisters Shouldn’t Be Popped

Blisters tend to heal on their own without any assistance. The skin that covers the fluid acts as a barrier between the wound and any possible bacteria. Opening a large blister can lead to infection and can make the healing process much more painful.

Treatments for Blisters

Most blisters heal on their own. However, if your blister is particularly painful (and you don’t have diabetes or poor circulation), you can carefully drain it at home. Simply wash your hands and the blister, apply iodine to the area, sterilize a sharp needle with rubbing alcohol and pierce around the blister’s edge to drain. Leave the skin intact, then cover with an antibiotic ointment, a bandage, and gauze. Check it regularly for infection and contact our podiatrist if any signs of infection appear.

It is important to avoid blisters in the first place. Blisters are usually caused by ill-fitting shoes or thin socks. Ensure that your shoes aren’t too tight and that you wear a thick pair of socks to cushion your feet and prevent blisters. If you have recurring blisters in the same spots, you may have foot deformities causing your problems.

When to See Our Doctor

If there is excessive swelling around the blister, pus, or it becomes very red and very painful, it could be infected and you should see our podiatrist immediately. Additionally, take extra care with blisters if you are diabetic. Popping or draining a blister, especially an infected blister, can lead to extremely dangerous ulcers in diabetic patients.

If there are bone structure deformities (such as bunions) that are causing your blisters, our doctor may be able to offer surgical intervention to alleviate the problem. Contact our podiatrist today to see if this option is right for you!

bunion houston txMany people don’t realize that the structure of the foot varies from person to person! There are many different foot types, from moderate arch, to flat footed, to high arched. Each foot type requires appropriate shoes for their structure, and every foot type has to be cared for appropriately to prevent related podiatry issues. When learning about your foot type, you can learn about possible complications based on the structure of your foot. Our expert for bunion in Houston, TX, explains these differences.

Low Arches

This is the foot type where the arch almost completely touches the ground while standing. Also known as flat feet or collapsed arches, this foot type can lead to many foot problems such as plantar fasciitis and heel pain due to lack of support. This foot type can benefit from insoles that provide extra arch support and well-fitting, supportive shoes.

Moderate Arch

A moderate arch is the ideal foot type. It is the most supportive, with a well-formed arch and an even balance between the ball of the foot and the heel. Although people with this foot type have fewer foot problems, it does not mean they are immune to developing them. Improper shoes and repetitive movement can always cause issues with any foot type, so it’s important to maintain good foot health with regular checkups and quality shoes.

High Arches

High arched feet have a high and rigid instep, with most of the weight bearing on the heel and forefoot. This foot type can lead to foot problems like hammertoes, calluses, or instability when walking, due to weight constantly being placed on the toes. Insoles are also helpful for this foot type, as they can provide cushioning between the forefoot and the heel. Wide, high-top shoes can also provide more stability for high arches.

podiatry houston txThe New Year is around the corner, and it’s time to make your New Year’s resolutions! Why not make great foot health a part of your goals? Maybe you’ve been putting off taking care of foot pain or investing in quality footwear, but now is the time to take care of it. Our specialist for podiatry in Houston, TX, offers some advice on steps you can take during your new year to preserve your foot health and put your best foot forward!

Buy New Shoes

It’s easy to put shoe shopping aside if you have a busy schedule, but your feet know the difference. Bad, old, or worn-out shoes contribute to foot problems and even issues with gait, and you may not notice until it’s too late. If you’ve been putting off shopping for new exercise shoes and it’s been over 6 months, treat yourself to a new pair for good support and preservation of your foot health. If you’re a runner, it’s especially important to keep your shoes in good shape to preserve your knees and shins.

Self-Care at Home

Sometimes we all put our self-care on hold to focus on daily tasks. Simple upkeep for calluses and ingrown toenails, or even fungus prevention, can get put on the back burner. But the new year is the perfect time to take care of yourself. Get back into the routine of Epsom salt foot soaks, pumice stones, foot massages, and toenail grooming for the new year!

Podiatry Appointments

Given new shoes and self-care, you may still have serious problems lurking, like bunions you’ve tried to ignore. It’s critical for you to take care of these issues before it’s too late, and now’s the time to get in for your podiatry appointment. Even if it’s just time for a checkup, this is a great way to start the new year.

dpm richmond txThe holidays are here and it’s time to pick out gifts! If anyone you’re buying gifts for needs some new shoes or has existing foot conditions to care for, consider purchasing foot health related items for them! Our DPM in Richmond, TX, gives some advice on gifting shoes and shoe accessories for your friends and family.

#1: Quality Shoes

Shoes are the perfect holiday gift. No matter who you’re looking to buy shoes for, you can always consider their main activities. If someone you know is a runner or is into sports, they’ll always need a new pair of athletic shoes! Make the investment in a high-quality pair of athletic shoes for your loved one and ensure that they take good care of their foot health.

#2: Foot-Type Specific Shoes

Sometimes people find that they have a specific foot type, like flat-footed or high-instep, but don’t purchase the special shoes for their foot type since they may be costly. However, it’s very important to wear the proper footwear for your type. When shopping for your loved ones, consider any foot issues they have and pick top-end shoes for their foot type. Another great option is to purchase shoe inserts, they may be a great gift for someone who already has a favorite pair of shoes but uses orthotics!

#3: Gift Certificates

Pampering yourself is always great during the holidays. Consider buying gift certificates for foot massages, podiatrist visits, or shoe stores (if you’re not sure their size or foot type!) It’s important that everyone takes care of their foot health and this is the season to take care of your loved ones as well.

foot pain in sugar land txMany of us just spent time giving thanks for family, friends, and the positive things in our lives. But we may take our feet for granted. We should remember that our feet work hard all the time to keep us moving. The average person takes about 4,000 steps a day, placing literal tons of force on their feet, probably without even thinking about how amazing that is! It’s important to care for our feet to avoid problems in the future. Our expert for foot pain in Sugar Land, TX, offers some advice on caring for your feet.

Foot Care

Your feet are made of a complex system of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. They can easily be damaged or develop problems that prevent mobility. To keep moving, take care of any foot problems as soon as they come up. Things like corns, bunions, and fungus can quickly get out of control and become difficult to treat. If you ignore these issues, you may cause further damage down the line and lose your ability to walk around freely!

Other Ways to Keep Feet Healthy

Exercise is important and regular exercise is a great way to care for your health. However, if you frequently run or do any sports, it’s crucial to have proper shoes to prevent foot injuries. Make sure you frequently check your shoes for excessive wear and be sure to replace them if they become too flexible. If you continue wearing worn-out shoes, you can suffer from shin splints or plantar fasciitis.

Podiatrist Visits

If you have any recurring foot problems or risk factors for foot problems, it’s critical to schedule regular podiatrist appointments. Risk factors like diabetes and foot deformities should be monitored by your doctor. Don’t neglect your foot health and remember to be thankful for good foot health, because you need it to remain active!

ankle specialists sugar land txBunions are painful, bony bumps that form on the joints of your feet. They usually occur on the joint next to the big toe or on the joint next to the pinky toe. Bunions are caused by your big toe pressing against the adjacent toe, forcing the joint to enlarge and become painful. Bunions do not go away on their own; they require treatment from a podiatrist. But how do they form, and how do you prevent them? Our ankle specialists in Sugar Land, TX, answer these questions to help you prevent bunions or continue care for existing bunions!

Main Causes of Bunions

#1: Bad Shoes

The biggest cause of bunions is wearing shoes that are too narrow and rub up against the outside of your feet. They can also cause toes to overlap, creating pressure on the joints in your toes. Over time, stress is placed on the bone with repeated movement and irritation occurs.

#2: Genetics

Bunions can also develop if you have a structural defect in your foot. These are generally inherited and cannot be prevented. Another problem that can cause bunions to form is arthritis. Arthritis damages the cartilage in the joint and makes you susceptible to bunions. However, you can take preventive measures to avoid or reduce the risk of developing them.

Symptoms of Bunions

Aside from the obvious bony bump on your joints and the pain associated with it, you may also experience other symptoms related to bunions:

  • Restricted movement of big toe
  • Stiffness or difficulty moving your toes
  • Callus or corn between your big toe and adjacent toe
  • Swelling around your big toe

If you notice any of these symptoms, look into treatment for bunions immediately.

Treatments for Bunions

The first thing you should do is get proper fitting shoes that allow movement of your toes. As the bunion heals, you can use bunion cushions to relieve pressure on the joint. If these treatments don’t work and bunion becomes severe enough, you may have to undergo foot surgery to remove the affected tissue. If treated properly early on by a podiatrist, this should be avoidable.

If you’ve suffered from bunions in the past, watch out for re-growth and contact your podiatrist if necessary.

houston foot doctorWinter is on its way and it’s time to prepare your feet for the frosty weather! If you plan on being outside a lot in freezing temperatures, it’s crucial to take care of your feet and watch out for any possible winter-related foot issues that may arise. Our experienced Houston foot doctor offers some tips for caring for your feet during the winter.

Get Quality Shoes

It’s very important to invest in well-fitting, comfortable and warm footwear for the snow and rain. Keeping your feet warm is number one for winter foot care. Your shoes should be waterproof and provide good traction, even if you live in a milder, rainy climate, as keeping your feet dry is integral to maintaining good foot health!

If you live in a very cold region with heavy snowfall, it’s best to invest in a quality insulated boot if you plan on trudging through the snow.

Problems to Look Out For

The most common problem with poorly insulated shoes during the winter is frostbite. If you suffer from poor circulation or diabetes, this can be an even bigger risk. It starts out as cold feet, then leads to numbness and pale skin. Mild cases can be treated by immediately going inside and warming your feet up, but it may be difficult to tell. If you suspect that it is severe, it’s critical to go to the doctor or contact your podiatrist!

Have Solutions

Having solutions to prevent cold feet before they start is the best way to go. Aside from waterproof boots for the rain and insulated boots for the snow, there are other ways to keep your feet toasty! Moisture-wicking socks are great for wet conditions, and wearing thick wool socks will help retain heat. If you still need some extra warmth, you can get some heated insoles for your boots.
