foot doctor richmond txMany of us have been there: you’re shopping for shoes, you find that perfect pair, but it’s a size too small. You figure it’s not such a big deal, or they’ll stretch out to the right size. However, this is wrong – buying shoes in the wrong size can cause serious damage to your feet! It’s important to buy a shoe that is comfortable and fits well while you’re shopping. Our foot doctor near Richmond, TX, explains more below.

Why Shoe Size Is Important

Ill-fitting shoes are the root of many foot problems. High heels, flip flops, and shoes that are too narrow or wide can cause problems such as:

  • Calluses
  • Bunions
  • Heel pain
  • Hammertoes
  • Claw toe

While ill-fitting shoes cause foot problems based on size, flip flops and high heels cause problems by design. Flip flops force your toes to grab on to the strap, leading to muscular problems and heel pain. High heels force your toes into a narrow toe box, putting pressure on your toe joints, a risk factor for hammertoes. If you enjoy wearing high heels, try to stick to shorter heights to avoid foot pain and other problems.

Too Big or Too Small?

While too small of a shoe can cause painful calluses or bunions, too large of a shoe can be an issue as well. Your toes and arch may become overworked, trying to hold on to the bottom of the shoe as you walk. This can also cause hammertoes and claw toes, which may require surgery if they are left untreated.

The Best Time To Try Shoes On

To get the most accurate fit for your shoes, shop at the end of the day when your feet are largest. If the shoe fits when your feet are swollen, they’ll fit all the time!

podiatrist sugar land txFoot injuries can be extremely dangerous for patients with diabetes. If not cared for immediately, wounds can develop into ulcers, become infected, and in the worst cases, lead to amputation of the limb. For diabetic patients, it is important to take steps to prevent wounds as much as possible. If one does become injured, it is critical to get help from our podiatrist as soon as possible and take measures to promote healing. Our podiatrist in Sugar Land, TX, explains more below.

Problems For Diabetic Patients

Diabetic patients have unique needs when it comes to podiatry. Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness and a reduced ability to feel pain in the feet, preventing the patient from feeling a cut or scrape. If the patient isn’t aware of the injury, the wound may worsen before they even notice it. This is why it’s best to be proactive and check your feet every day!

Additionally, patients who are overweight, smoke, or use insulin are at an even higher risk of developing foot ulcers. Keep these risk factors in mind when visiting our podiatrist for a checkup.

Successful Treatment

See our podiatrist as soon as possible if you notice a wound or possible ulcer on your foot. We can help prevent infection, remove any dead skin around the wound, and apply medication and a foot dressing. If an infection has developed, we can evaluate if you need antibiotics or other wound care.

Other Methods To Promote Health

Research suggests that probiotics can aid in wound healing. In a study, diabetic patients suffering from foot ulcers were followed throughout the healing time of their wounds. Some patients were given probiotic supplements and others were not. After 12 weeks, the patients that had been taking probiotic supplements saw a greater reduction in the size and severity of their ulcers than the other patients[1]. Consult with our podiatrist today to see if this option is right for you!

bunion treatment in houstonIf you have a summer trip on the horizon, but plan on investing in some new shoes, make sure that you make time to break them in before you take off! The last thing you want is ill-fitting shoes or blisters while you’re trying to enjoy your time. Our specialist for bunion treatment in Houston gives some tips for breaking in shoes and how to tell if they’re just not the right fit.

Fit Of The Shoes

Since ill-fitting shoes will never truly be broken in, it’s crucial that you find shoes that are perfect for your feet. If your new sneakers are tight around the toes, don’t assume that they will stretch out over time. They can end up causing pain, hammertoes, or other foot problems. When you buy your shoes, make sure that there is enough room around the toes, the heel doesn’t slip when you walk, and they feel good to wear! If you have shoes that fit properly, the break-in period should last only a few days.

When To Buy Shoes

Your feet swell throughout the day, so it is recommended that you try on shoes in the evening to get the most accurate fit. If the shoes are comfortable when your feet are larger, they’ll also be comfortable at other times during the day.

What To Do For Blisters

Some shoes are harder to break in than others. Soft, flexible shoes such as exercise shoes and sandals do not require as long of a break-in period as stiffer shoes, like dress shoes or high heels. Keep this in mind when you pick out your shoes and plan the days leading up to your vacation departure. If you do choose stiffer shoes and develop blisters, use an anti-bacterial gel and place a band-aid over the area. Avoid wearing the shoes until the blister has healed. When you try again, consider preemptively placing pads on your heels to prevent future blisters.

podiatrist richmond txHammertoes are a result of muscle imbalances in the foot. The imbalance causes the hammertoe to form when the middle joint of the toe is bent and becomes stuck in this bent position. This condition can be very painful and make it difficult to wear shoes without irritation. Our podiatrist in Richmond, TX, explains more below.

What Causes Hammertoes?

Hammertoes are caused by a muscle imbalance that puts excess pressure on the joints in the toes. There are a few causes of muscle imbalances that can lead to hammertoes, including:

  • Flat feet
  • Age
  • Poorly fitting shoes
  • Injury

There are two types of hammertoes: rigid and flexible. Flexible hammertoes simply can still be moved at the joint area, meaning it is less advanced and will be more responsive to simple treatments. Rigid hammertoes can no longer be moved at the joint, meaning it is harder to treat and it is possible that surgery will be required to correct the problem.

Who Is At Risk?

Anyone with muscle imbalances in their feet is at risk for hammertoes. Additionally, people who wear shoes that don’t fit properly put themselves at risk; this includes high-heeled shoes that push the toes forward and shoes that are too small.

It’s important to note that individuals with diabetes should be cautious and contact our podiatrist immediately if they develop hammertoes. Hammertoes can be a serious issue for someone with diabetes, as they can lead to a foot ulcer or infection.

How Can It Be Treated?

Our podiatrist will examine your feet to determine if you have hammertoes. Treatments include hammertoe pads to prevent excess pressure on the toes, wider shoes, foot exercises, and ice packs to relieve pain and swelling. If these methods don’t resolve the hammertoe, surgery may be needed.

dpm sugar land txVaricose veins are twisted veins that mostly occur on the feet and legs. The presence of varicose veins is usually only a cosmetic concern; however, some people may experience discomfort caused by varicose veins. Our DPM in Sugar Land, TX, provides some information on varicose veins below.

How Do They Form?

Damaged or weak valves in the legs and feet can cause varicose veins to appear. As your arteries pump blood to your heart, the valves in your legs and feet must be strong enough to overcome gravity. If the muscles aren’t strong enough, blood will back up and pool in the veins.

Risk factors for varicose veins include:

  • Genes. If your family has a history of varicose veins, you are more likely to develop them.
  • Age. As we get older, the valves in the veins that regulate blood flow become weaker.
  • Obesity. Extra weight on your veins means they have to work harder.

What Are The Symptoms?

Usually, varicose veins do not cause symptoms. They may only be noticed as dark purple or blue veins on the legs or feet. For people that do experience symptoms, they may experience some of the following:

  • Aching in the legs
  • Itchiness around the vein
  • Muscle cramping or swelling
  • Heaviness with walking

If varicose veins result in complications, they may include bleeding, ulcers, or blood clots. Complications are rare, but possible. If you have varicose veins that are painful, you should be evaluated for complications.

How Are They Treated?

Compression stockings are helpful in managing this condition. They compress your legs, which makes it easier for blood to flow. There are also treatments like sclerotherapy, an injection that scars and closes the vein. Laser therapy is another option to fade the appearance of varicose veins.

Other preventative measures include exercise, losing weight, and a healthy diet. In addition to weight loss, exercise can help improve circulation and make you less likely to develop varicose veins.

orthotics in houstonCotton socks are the standard go-to sock material for most people. However, not everyone knows that cotton is not the only option—and sometimes, it’s not the best. When a cotton sock gets wet, it doesn’t dry well, bunches up in your shoe, causing blisters and foot problems. If you have any issues like foot pain, blisters, sweaty feet, or fungal toenails, cotton can make your condition worse. Thankfully, there are alternatives for those with these foot conditions! Our expert for orthotics in Houston explains this below.

For Foot and Heel Pain

Synthetic material is much better at wicking away moisture and keeping your feet dry. Opt for socks made from materials such as acrylic or Coolmax. There are acrylic socks in every style, from dress socks to sportswear. For foot and heel pain, look for synthetic socks with extra padding around the ball of foot and heel area, as this offers more support and cushioning for the foot. It can also prevent blisters!

For Diabetes

Moisture-wicking compression socks are great for those with diabetes. Additionally, there are socks with antifungal and antibacterial treatments, as well as seamless socks that won’t damage the sensitive skin that some diabetic people have. Ensure that any compression sock or specialty diabetes sock is synthetic and breathes well to prevent foot problems, such as fungus and infection.

For Exercise and Sweaty Feet

There are many sock choices, each recommended for different types of exercise! For running or hiking, socks with padding in the heel and ball of the foot can prevent strain and injury to the foot.

For cycling, there are socks with elastic arch support to prevent bunching over long distances. Additionally, compression socks and thicker, anti-blister socks can be great for athletes. Make sure these are made of moisture-wicking material, so they keep your feet cool and healthy!

sugar land podiatristMany people may not consider going to a foot doctor to be an important part of their healthcare. However, it is crucial for many people! Athletes, children, and the elderly are among some people that should have regular foot checkups. Additionally, those with diabetes should establish a good relationship with a podiatrist to address any foot health concerns. Our Sugar Land podiatrist provides some information below.

Why See A Podiatrist?

Foot pain can affect anyone; however, foot disorders and injuries are most common in people that are highly active or have pre-existing conditions. Athletes and children are generally very active and strain their feet on a regular basis. Because of this, it’s important that they have regular checkups and a podiatrist that can assist if they begin to suffer from foot pain.

Additional groups that benefit from foot doctors are people with diabetes and the elderly. The elderly may have more problems with the joints in their feet due to age, and have difficulty cutting their toenails or otherwise maintaining their feet. People with diabetes usually have neuropathy (nerve damage) in their feet, and high risk of foot ulcers and infection, and greatly benefit from regular podiatrist visits.

Symptoms Of Foot Problems

Symptoms will differ depending on the cause of your foot problem, but the most common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the heel of the foot
  • Pain along the bottom of the foot
  • Difficulty walking
  • A sore that won’t heal
  • Thick, yellow toenails

Our podiatrist can help explain these symptoms and quickly diagnose and treat your foot problem.

Treatment And Prevention

Our podiatrist can provide treatment for foot problems such as arthritis, fungal infection, plantar fasciitis, heel pain, and more. Treatments can include rest, supportive boots, and even surgery if necessary. Our podiatrist can recommend prevention methods such as stretching before exercise and wearing properly fitting shoes.

podiatrists sugar land txIf you’ve noticed you frequently have cold feet and toes, it is important to look into it. Cold feet and toes can be a symptom of a bigger problem, such as vascular issues or diabetes. Our podiatrists in Sugar Land, TX, provide some information below.

The Problem of Cold Feet

Most people experience cold feet and toes at some point in their lives. However, if this is a recurring problem for you, it may be connected to another condition. If you notice other symptoms along with your cold feet, such as numbness, tingling, or pins and needles, your problem may be connected to neuropathy. If you are at risk for heart or vascular conditions, cold feet and toes may be connected to that. In any case, it is important to be examined by a doctor to determine the cause.

What Are the Causes?

Some of the most common causes of cold feet include:

  • Poor circulation, which prevents warm blood from getting to your feet and toes. Sedentary lifestyles, heart conditions, and smoking can all cause poor circulation.
  • Diabetes, which makes feet cold to the touch, as well as feel cold due to nerve damage
  • Anemia, which causes a shortage of red blood cells
  • Hypothyroidism, which can cause problems with metabolism and contribute to poor circulation

Other less common causes include Raynaud’s disease and peripheral artery disease.

Treatment Options

Depending on the cause of your cold feet, there are multiple treatment options. For all sufferers, exercise is extremely beneficial to get your blood flowing. You can also do warm foot baths, wear socks, and use heated shoe inserts.

If you suffer from iron-deficiency anemia, cold feet can often be remedied with a treatment plan from your doctor to increase the iron in your body. Treatments for heart conditions and diabetes can also be managed by your doctor.

If you have any other symptoms, such as sores on your feet that don’t heal, joint pain, or rash, you should contact our podiatrist and make an appointment immediately. These can be dangerous for patients with diabetes.

foot specialist sugar land txMany may not be aware of the connection between diet, health conditions, and the health of their feet. However, there are strong connections between the side effects of diet-related health conditions and foot problems. Our foot specialist in Sugar Land, TX, outlines these below.

How Are They Connected?

Diabetes, poor circulation, and gout are prominent cases that can cause foot health issues. Diabetes causes neuropathy, or nerve damage, that puts you at risk for a foot ulcer. If these ulcers become infected, you may have difficulty healing them, causing the infection to spread.

The following factors increase the risk of nerve damage for individuals with diabetes:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Being overweight
  • Uncontrolled blood sugar levels

It’s important to control these factors as much as possible to prevent diabetic neuropathy and foot problems. Additionally, exercise, quitting smoking, and healthy eating can help reduce the risk of diabetes-related foot problems.

Other Complications

Gout—inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup uric acid crystals in the joint—is another foot problem with diet-related risk factors. Gout causes pain, stiffness, redness, and swelling around the joints of the toes. While gout has many causes, some risk factors include:

  • Hypertension
  • Western diet—including bacon and meat
  • Drinking a lot of alcohol
  • Obesity

There are specific diets recommended for gout sufferers that reduce uric acid production and lessen joint pain.

Prevent Foot Problems

Complications can quickly arise with diabetes. Make sure to check your feet every day for cuts or ulcers, even if you don’t feel that something is wrong. Contact our podiatrist if you have a cut or sore on your foot that doesn’t heal. This can progress to further issues and, in the most severe cases, lead to foot or leg amputation.

Keep eating healthy and maintain a good exercise regimen. Wash your feet, wear well-fitting shoes, and do not remove corns or calluses on your own.

If gout is something you suffer from, take steps to eat gout-friendly fruits and vegetables and cut back on meat. Watch your feet for worsening of symptoms and always schedule an appointment with our podiatrist if you have any foot concerns.

ankle-doctor-richmond-txWith summer around the corner, a lot of people are waiting to break out their sandals and enjoy the warm weather! However, it’s important to be aware that there are risks associated with wearing sandals that can cause damage to your feet. Our ankle doctor in Richmond, TX, wants to inform you of the possible risks for injury when wearing flip-flops so you can make an informed decision!

Why Sandals Are Risky

While you may be eager to show off your pedicure or simply let your feet breathe, wearing sandals can lead to serious foot injury. If you frequently wear sandals, you may experience pain in your heel, arch, or toes. The risk for these problems is rooted in the design of the sandal itself–your feet and toes are simply trying too hard to hold on to the shoe’s strap, putting strain on the tendons and muscles in your feet as you walk.

Coupled with the lack of arch and heel support, this is a recipe for quickly developing strain-related foot problems.

Foot Problems Sandals Can Cause

Frequently wearing unsupportive shoes can lead to the following foot problems:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Heel pain
  • Hammertoes (caused by your toes holding on to the strap)

These problems may occur suddenly or worsen over time, depending on the frequency of wear and the shape of the shoes.

Prevention

The riskiest sandal are completely flat flip-flops with only one strap between the first and second toe. However, there are other sandal options if you still want to let your feet free. Look for sandals with wide straps, heel straps, and a comfortable supportive sole. Ergonomic sandals can help you avoid injury and future foot problems!
