houston tx podiatristsGout is a condition that causes sudden, sharp pain in the toe joints, ankles, and knees. There are generally no symptoms prior to the first attack but becomes a recurring problem after the first attack. Depending on the severity of your condition, the pain may come and go more frequently. Our Houston, TX, podiatrists explain more below.

What Is Gout?

Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines, which are present in many foods, as well as the body. This can either be caused by the body producing too much uric acid, or the kidneys failing to filter it out properly. Uric acid then solidifies into crystals which get stuck in the joints, causing inflammation and triggering painful gout. The pain usually attacks the joint of the big toe, the ankle and the knee.

Risks For Gout

Some risk factors for gout include:

  • Diet of high-purine foods: red meats, organ meats, caviar, gravies, broths
  • Being male
  • Moderate to high alcohol intake
  • Arthritis
  • Obesity
  • Drink sugary drinks

To avoid gout flare-ups, it’s important to reduce the intake of high-purine foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol. If you have a kidney condition or a thyroid condition that causes buildup of uric acid in the blood, get regular checkups with your doctor.

Common Treatments

During a gout attack, ice and elevate the affected joint. Avoid sugar, alcohol, and simply rest. You can take ibuprofen for the pain.

It’s important to talk to your doctor as soon as possible. There are medications that reduce uric acid levels and steroids that can help reduce pain in the joint. If left untreated, gout can damage your joints, limit your movement, and cause kidney damage. Other related health risks, like obesity, kidney disease, and heart disease, are more likely to occur or worsen.

heel pain in houston txAs the temperatures drop, winter calls for insulated boots. Insulated boots are great for keeping your feet warm and safe from frostbite, and our podiatrist advises you to always wear them during the winter. However, if your feet get too warm, they will sweat, and your boots may develop a bad smell. If you’ve been having issues with odorous winter boots, our specialist for heel pain in Houston, TX, wants to offer some tips below.

Air Them Out

First, air your boots out. If they have inserts, or you wear orthotics, remove those as well. Let these dry out; you can stuff your boots with newspaper afterwards and leave them overnight to absorb any remaining moisture.

Cleaning and Deodorizing

To begin, fill your sink with water and add one cup of vinegar (the vinegar helps remove odor). Soak your shoe inserts in the vinegar mixture, scrub them thoroughly, squeeze the water out, and lay them out to dry. Add a small bit of laundry detergent to the water and vinegar, take a sponge or cloth, and use this mixture to wipe down the outside of your boots. After cleaning, let the boots dry completely.

These steps should reduce the odor in your boots. To maintain this, use baking soda in your boots once a week – simply put baking soda into a sock, tie the end, and leave them in your boots overnight. This will absorb smells and prevent odor from returning.

Consider Different Boots

If these methods don’t help, or you notice your feet becoming more smelly or sweaty, consider getting boots with less insulation. Check the weight of your insulation and try to better match it to the average temperatures in your area. Contact our podiatrist if you have further questions regarding appropriate footwear!

Many people take their feet for granted until something starts to hurt. If you’re experiencing pain and have found yourself asking “when should I see a podiatrist?”, you’re in the right place! It’s critical to schedule an appointment with our doctor if you are experiencing pain; however, there are other situations in which it’s advisable to have an evaluation. Our foot doctor in Sugar Land, TX, explains more below.

Prompts To Visit

Most people don’t end up at our podiatrist’s office until their feet or ankles hurt. It’s important to schedule an appointment immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the arch
  • A bump or painful deformity
  • Sores that don’t heal
  • Pain from an injury
  • Flat feet, or high-arched feet

Ignoring these problems will only worsen your condition and cause more pain down the line.

Other Reasons

While you may not be experiencing pain at the moment, there are risk factors that should prompt you to visit our podiatrist. Individuals with diabetes, athletes, and the elderly should all have regular checkups with our doctor. Diabetes can cause neuropathy, and the resulting numbness may prevent the person from feeling foot injuries that our podiatrist can detect and treat. Athletes’ feet are frequently under a lot of stress during sports or running, so regular foot exams are encouraged. Additionally, elderly people undergo age-related bone changes and are more prone to injuries. They may also benefit from having our podiatrist trim their toenails and diagnose issues they may not be aware of, such as toenail fungus or bunions.

Regular Checkups

If you end up being diagnosed with a type of foot dysfunction by our podiatrist, you should go for regular checkups. Those presenting with pain or structural deformities should schedule follow-ups with our office to ensure their feet are healing properly.

ankle doctor houstonThe weather is starting to cool off and it’s time to start layering up! While you may be focusing on jackets and scarves, don’t forget about keeping your feet warm. Wool socks are a great option for keeping your feet cozy during these cold winter months. Our ankle doctor in Houston explains more below.

Keeping Feet Warm

During the winter, it is crucial to keep your feet warm. If you live in an area with extreme cold temperatures, make sure that you have well-fitting insulated boots and warm socks. If you find that your boots and socks don’t keep your feet warm enough, consider getting heated insoles to protect your feet.

Socks and Boots

Some great options for socks include wool and wool/cotton blends that offer moisture wicking. Wool is great for keeping your feet nice and warm, while the moisture-wicking ensures that your feet stay dry and clean. For boots, check the temperature rating of the insulation and match it to the average temperature in your area during the winter.

Dangers of Cold Feet

The risks of cold feet include frostbite and numbness. Extreme frostbite can lead to damaged nerves in the feet and permanent neuropathy (tingling sensations in the extremities). If you have diabetes and already have neuropathy, it is especially important to care for your feet during the cold months, as it can be more difficult to tell if you are suffering from frostbite. This can lead to loss of nerve function and even possible amputation if not treated immediately. If you have any concerns about peripheral neuropathy or believe that you’re experiencing extreme frostbite, contact our podiatrist as soon as possible.

bunion treatment in sugarlandMost people take their feet for granted, but if you think about it, we rely on our feet every single day to get us where we need to be! Our feet are complex, and podiatrists have a deep understanding of how they function and how to best support and maintain them. Additionally, if you experience a break, sprain, or other foot problem, seeing our podiatrist is critical both during and after healing. Our specialist for bunion treatment in Sugarland explains more below!

Foot Problems

You may be suffering from a structural foot problem and not even be aware of it until you develop foot pain. Diagnosis of foot pain usually comes with an explanation of the underlying problem, which could be flat feet, high-arched feet, or abnormal gait. Other problems, such as overgrown or yellow toenails, may point to a fungal infection that must be treated professionally. It is important that you see our podiatrist to be accurately diagnosed and treated.

Podiatrists and Specialization

Many podiatrists specialize in an area, such as foot surgery, ankle surgery, or diabetic foot care. Having a podiatrist who specializes in the area you need help with assures that you get the best care possible. Also, even if you don’t suffer from a specific foot problem or experience pain, podiatrists provide care to patients as they age, since the elderly may have problems clipping their toenails or maintaining other aspects of foot health.

Extra Care

While you can take care of certain things on your own, such as trimming toenails, removing dead skin, and wearing well-fitted shoes, there is extra care that podiatrists provide. Podiatrists can have you fitted for custom orthotics to support your feet and give you regular checkups to ensure your feet stay healthy!

podiatry sugar land txOrthotics are shoe inserts that help support fallen or high arches, relieve back pain, ease joint aches, and fix issues with gait. If you use orthotics, you may be wondering how long they should last and when you should replace them. There are a few things to consider when answering these questions, such as the type of orthotics you use and how much you wear them. Our expert for podiatry in Sugar Land, TX, explains more here.

Types Of Orthotics

Custom orthotics are typically made of foam or plastic and are molded to your exact foot shape by our podiatrist. Our podiatrist evaluates your specific needs and foot shape, which guarantees that these orthotics will take care of your foot problems. The other type of orthotics can be bought in most drugstores and cut to fit the inside of your shoes. These types don’t last as long and may not take care of your specific issue.

When To Replace Orthotics?

Custom orthotics can last about two years, since they are custom fit to your foot and move with you. Keep in mind that the more you wear them, the faster they will need to be replaced. If you aren’t feeling any pain and the orthotics still fit your feet properly, they are most likely okay. Once they begin causing foot pain or cause discomfort during sports or other activities, you should consider replacing them.

Store-bought orthotics don’t last as long since they aren’t custom fit to your foot. These should be replaced as soon as you notice that they are not fitting as well or are causing foot pain. Wearing poorly fitted orthotics can cause foot and gait problems.

Regular Exams

If you are unsure about the status of your orthotics, you can make an appointment with our podiatrist to have them evaluated for a proper fit. You should see our podiatrist every six months for an exam as well, to ensure that your orthotics are doing a proper job of supporting your feet.

As the fall and winter seasons approach, so does dry air and dry skin. While we tend to focus on ways to relieve houston tx podiatriststhis problem on our faces and hands, it’s important to keep our feet in mind as well! If you experience dry skin on your feet, there are many treatment options to achieve smooth, moisturized skin. Our Houston, TX, podiatrists explain more below.

Treatment Options

Using Epsom salt soaks is the perfect first step in dry foot treatment. Epsom salt is often used in baths for muscle aches and pains, but it is also effective for softening the skin on your feet. It is a mix of minerals (magnesium and sulfate) that dissolve in warm water.

How To Use Epsom Salt

You can purchase Epsom salt at most supermarkets and grocery stores. Make sure you buy the correct type, as there is also Epsom salt for agricultural use! You will also need a foot bath to soak your feet in, and a pumice stone to scrub dead skin off. After you have all your materials ready, simply:

  1. Wash your feet well.
  2. Fill the foot bath with hot water and add ½ cup of Epsom salt.
  3. Soak your feet for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Dry your feet and use the pumice stone to gently scrub dry, dead skin off.
  5. Apply a lotion to moisturize your feet.
  6. Repeat this daily until all the dry, dead skin is gone!

Additionally, you can add a few drops of essential oil to the foot bath for a more relaxing experience.

The Root Cause Of Winter Skin

The lack of humidity in the air is the cause of dry winter skin. While Epsom salt soaks, lotions and other skin treatments can relieve this problem, a good method of prevention is to moisten the air in your home. Consider buying a humidifier for your home to avoid dry indoor air.

podiatrist pasadena txAthletes’ feet are exposed to many factors that increase their risk for a foot injury, including hard pavement, repetitive motions, and high-impact play. Depending on the type of sport, there may be a high risk for ankle sprains, stress fractures, or chronic heel pain. It is critical that athletes take measures to prevent injuries, such as wearing the correct shoes and increasing activity slowly. Our podiatrist near Pasadena, TX, provides more information below.

Types of Foot Injuries

The most common sports-related injuries include:

  • Ankle sprains. This is one of the most common sports-related injuries. If you believe you have a sprain, it’s important to be seen by our podiatrist immediately to make sure it’s not something more serious. It can be hard to tell a sprain from a fracture.
  • Stress fractures. These tend to occur when you start a new sport or exercise plan, and are linked to improper shoes, hard pavement, or jumping in too quickly. Left untreated, a fracture can lead to chronic ankle instability, making it painful to play sports or run.
  • Heel pain. Common for people that run or play sports on hard pavement, heel pain is generally caused by plantar fasciitis or nerve problems.
  • Problems with the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon runs down the back of the leg. A sudden increase in repetitive, high-impact sports, can cause this tendon to become inflamed (Achilles tendonitis) and even degenerate (Achilles tendonosis).

What To Do After A Sports-Related Injury

While it may be difficult for an athlete to stay off their feet and avoid exercise, that is exactly what they should do after an injury to ensure proper healing. Immobilize the foot, rest, apply ice, and elevate the leg. Compression socks can also be worn to reduce pain as well. Do not return to regular activity until you are healed!

Preventing Injury

Wear proper shoes, stretch before exercising, ease into new sports or exercise regimens, and listen to your body. If you experience foot pain, take a rest and visit our podiatrist for an evaluation.

foot doctor richmond txMany of us have been there: you’re shopping for shoes, you find that perfect pair, but it’s a size too small. You figure it’s not such a big deal, or they’ll stretch out to the right size. However, this is wrong – buying shoes in the wrong size can cause serious damage to your feet! It’s important to buy a shoe that is comfortable and fits well while you’re shopping. Our foot doctor near Richmond, TX, explains more below.

Why Shoe Size Is Important

Ill-fitting shoes are the root of many foot problems. High heels, flip flops, and shoes that are too narrow or wide can cause problems such as:

  • Calluses
  • Bunions
  • Heel pain
  • Hammertoes
  • Claw toe

While ill-fitting shoes cause foot problems based on size, flip flops and high heels cause problems by design. Flip flops force your toes to grab on to the strap, leading to muscular problems and heel pain. High heels force your toes into a narrow toe box, putting pressure on your toe joints, a risk factor for hammertoes. If you enjoy wearing high heels, try to stick to shorter heights to avoid foot pain and other problems.

Too Big or Too Small?

While too small of a shoe can cause painful calluses or bunions, too large of a shoe can be an issue as well. Your toes and arch may become overworked, trying to hold on to the bottom of the shoe as you walk. This can also cause hammertoes and claw toes, which may require surgery if they are left untreated.

The Best Time To Try Shoes On

To get the most accurate fit for your shoes, shop at the end of the day when your feet are largest. If the shoe fits when your feet are swollen, they’ll fit all the time!

podiatrist sugar land txFoot injuries can be extremely dangerous for patients with diabetes. If not cared for immediately, wounds can develop into ulcers, become infected, and in the worst cases, lead to amputation of the limb. For diabetic patients, it is important to take steps to prevent wounds as much as possible. If one does become injured, it is critical to get help from our podiatrist as soon as possible and take measures to promote healing. Our podiatrist in Sugar Land, TX, explains more below.

Problems For Diabetic Patients

Diabetic patients have unique needs when it comes to podiatry. Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness and a reduced ability to feel pain in the feet, preventing the patient from feeling a cut or scrape. If the patient isn’t aware of the injury, the wound may worsen before they even notice it. This is why it’s best to be proactive and check your feet every day!

Additionally, patients who are overweight, smoke, or use insulin are at an even higher risk of developing foot ulcers. Keep these risk factors in mind when visiting our podiatrist for a checkup.

Successful Treatment

See our podiatrist as soon as possible if you notice a wound or possible ulcer on your foot. We can help prevent infection, remove any dead skin around the wound, and apply medication and a foot dressing. If an infection has developed, we can evaluate if you need antibiotics or other wound care.

Other Methods To Promote Health

Research suggests that probiotics can aid in wound healing. In a study, diabetic patients suffering from foot ulcers were followed throughout the healing time of their wounds. Some patients were given probiotic supplements and others were not. After 12 weeks, the patients that had been taking probiotic supplements saw a greater reduction in the size and severity of their ulcers than the other patients[1]. Consult with our podiatrist today to see if this option is right for you!
