Another year is gone, and a new one is in full swing! Did you put a list of New Year’s Resolutions together? Many people do set a resolution or two, and there’s no shame in that. But a big one – which seems to come up every year – revolves around weight loss and getting fit. At Vargas Foot & Ankle Specialists we encourage you in your pursuits of a healthy lifestyle, and one great way to ensure your goal is reached is to take care of your feet.
So what does getting fit and foot health have in common? Well, if you go to a fitness club, spa or swimming pool to exercise, then you will have to deal with locker rooms. In locker rooms lurk fungi, known as athlete’s foot or tinea pedis. With the enclosed conditions, dampness and humidity, these allow the fungal infection to grow.
Symptoms of athlete’s foot include itching, stinging or burning between the toes and on the soles of the feet. You may also have blisters, cracking and peeling skin, or dry skin on the bottoms or sides of your feet.
You can help prevent athlete’s foot from happening. First you should always air out your shoes and change sweaty or wet socks. Secondly, you will want to invest in a pair of shower shoes. You don’t want to walk around barefoot in locker rooms or swimming pool areas. Lastly, you should not share a towel, shoes or socks with anyone. This fungal infection is contagious and can pass from towels, shoes and floors.
If you notice any symptoms of athlete’s feet or are suffering from a sport related foot injury, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Marco Vargas. He has experience in treating fungal infections of the foot and treatment options are available. You can call our Sugar Land office at (281) 313-0090.
