Biologic Therapy Q&A

What is biologic therapy?

Biologic therapy is an outpatient procedure that uses Amnio Flow –– a liquid that contains natural growth factors like hyaluronic acid and amino acids –– to increase the production of new cells and tissue. The regenerative process reduces inflammation, prevents infection, and enhances mobility so you can avoid surgery and return to your favorite activities.

What types of foot and ankle problems can benefit from biologic therapy?

At Vargas Foot & Ankle Specialists, Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo use biologic therapy to treat various foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Bunions
  • Bursitis
  • Fractures
  • Gout
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fractures

You might also benefit from biologic therapy if you run or play sports and suffer an activity-related injury.

Who is a candidate for biologic therapy?

Before recommending biologic therapy, Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo review your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, if the pain extends into other parts of your body, and if it’s worse during certain activities, like exercise.

Next, Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo examine your foot and ankle, looking for bruising, redness, or swelling. He presses on the heels and balls of your feet to check for sensitivity and tests your ankles’ range of motion. Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo also orders diagnostic imaging, like X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI, to rule out fractures or soft tissue injuries.

After making a diagnosis, Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo make treatment recommendations. Most minor foot problems, including sports injuries like plantar fasciitis, improve with biologic therapy.

What happens during biologic therapy?

If Dr. Vargas or Dr. Marcelo determines you’re a candidate for biologic therapy, he prepares a syringe with Amnio Flow. Amnio Flow contains amino acids, carbohydrates, hyaluronic acid, and extracellular matrix proteins. When combined, these ingredients reduce inflammation and encourage the production of new and healthy soft tissues.

Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo administer a series of injections into a specific part of your foot –– like your heel or ankle. When the solution enters your body, it increases blood flow to the site and promotes regeneration.

Is biologic therapy safe?

Biologic therapy is safe and usually well-tolerated. After treatment, it’s normal to experience redness, bruising, and swelling. Drink plenty of water and take it easy for at least 24 hours. You can return to work, exercise, and other regular activities the next day.
