Pediatric Foot Care Q&A

What is pediatric foot care?

Pediatric foot care is a podiatry subspecialty that diagnoses and treats foot and ankle problems in children. Kids’ feet and ankles grow rapidly, making them more susceptible to sprains, strains, and fractures. If your child suffers from foot or ankle pain, contact Dr. Vargas or Dr. Marcelo immediately.

What types of issues does pediatric foot care treat?

At Vargas Foot & Ankle Specialists, Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo treats various issues with pediatric foot care, including:

Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail develops when your child’s toenail grows into the soft skin surrounding their nail bed. As the nail grows into the skin, it causes irritation, resulting in redness, swelling, and pain.

Flat feet

If your child has flat feet, their soles make contact with the floor whenever they stand up. Everyone has flat feet at birth, but the arches typically form by age six. Some people never develop arches. When that occurs, it increases the risk of other problems, like heel and back pain.

Plantar warts

Plantar warts form on the weight-bearing areas of the feet, like the balls and heels. They occur as a result of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo offer several types of wart treatment, including cryotherapy and prescription-strength peeling medication.

Sever’s disease

Sever’s disease refers to growth plate inflammation. It occurs at the back of the heel and commonly affects active children who play sports. Thankfully, various treatments can relieve pain and help your child return to their favorite activities.

What happens during a pediatric foot care visit?

A pediatric foot care visit begins with a review of your child’s medical records and a discussion of their symptoms, including when the pain started and if certain activities, like exercise, make it worse.

Next, Dr. Vargas or Dr. Marcelo examines your child’s feet, toes, and ankles, looking for redness, swelling, or bruising. He/She gently presses on different areas of your child’s feet, pinpointing pain or sensitivity. Dr. Vargas and Dr. Marcelo also tests your child’s reflexes, muscle strength, and range of motion. Then, he/she orders X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI to get a closer look at their bones, joints, and soft tissues.

After making a diagnosis, Dr. Vargas or Dr. Marcelo provides custom treatment recommendations.
