Once developed, neuropathy can present a variety of challenges to health care and in many cases exercise can reduce the negative side effects of neuropathy. Putting excessive pressure on the feet during weight-bearing activities will often lead to fractures, ulcers and other foot conditions. This means that exercises that include running or jumping are discouraged in favor of low impact exercises like walking, swimming and biking.
Maintaining an exercise regimen will aid in an increase in muscle strength and coordination. When walking it is important to keep the pelvis directly beneath the abdomen and to only walk short distances. This will help to reduce the shock to the foot during exercise. Biking and swimming should emphasize the full use of the ankle joint. Moving the joint will largely help in reducing stiffness and pain.
There are many exercises that can be done to specifically help patients with neuropathy reduce the amount of pain and soreness they have in their daily lives.
