Black toenail is a condition in which one or more of the toenails has become physically discolored. The discoloration is caused by a blood blister that has formed underneath the affected toenail. The discoloration in the nail is often accompanied by swelling underneath the nail that can cause pressure and pain.
The swelling underneath the nail will typically go down after about 24 hours. Within this first day period, pain or discomfort may be present, but will tend to calm down in the days following. If pressure has not subsided, medical attention may be necessary to relieve the pressure underneath the nail.
Sometimes the whole nail is involved. Other times, only parts of the nail are affected, such as one side or the other. Eventually, the blackened nail will fall off and another healthy nail will grow back in its place. Make sure to have Dr. Marco Vargas check to ensure that the nail bed has not been damaged permanently in order for a new nail to be able to grow in.
