There are different contributing factors that can lead to heel pain, but one of the most common reasons is plantar fasciitis. If the bottom of your heel hurts with the first few steps you take in the morning, then this is most likely the cause. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the tissue that runs the length of the foot (the plantar fascia) becomes inflamed or develops small tears. This can happen because of extra pressure being put on your feet. For example, people who are overweight or who play sports that require running and jumping are more likely to develop this inflammation. So are those with flat feet whose arches are not properly supported, or elderly people who have less cushioning in their feet. You can treat this by wearing an orthotic and stretching the plantar fascia every day.
