Medically, this is referred to as metatarsalgia. It is called this because the pain and swelling occurs in area of the foot which contains the metatarsal bones. You have 5 metatarsal bones and metatarsalgia will generally appear in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsal region.
This pain is usually experienced in athletes or patients with bunions, hammertoes, or stress fractures. Athletes will experience metatarsal pain as a result of high stress situations. The same concept applies to those the average person with these deformities. When the foot experiences frequent or consistent stress, you stand the chance of developing metatarsalgia.
If you have developed pain in the ball of your foot, a change in your shoe choice is recommended. Wearing shoes specifically designed for your daily activities can reduce stress applied to your feet. If this change does not help the pain, custom orthotics could be the right option for you.
