There are different reasons for arch pain, but one of the lesser known causes is a Lisfranc injury. Not many people are familiar with this type of injury, because it can often be mistaken for a regular sprain.
The Lisfranc joint is located in the middle of the foot. It is the area where the metatarsals and the tarsals connect with each other. It is responsible for arch support and controlling your gait, making it a very important part of the foot. It can be damaged in twisting falls or when something heavy is dropped on the foot. It is not something that can simply be “walked off.” Rather, a long period of healing and sometimes even surgery may be required.
Knowing when you have a Lisfranc injury is vital to healing properly. If you feel pain in your midfoot and experience swelling, bruising, or the inability to put weight on your foot, you need to come in to our office for a correct diagnosis.
