As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month in May, we must check in with ourselves and prioritize our mental wellness. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our emotional and psychological well-being. However, this neglect can lead to severe mental health issues over time. Hence, setting aside 5 minutes daily to focus on our mental health can make a huge difference in the long run.

5-minute mental health check tips:

Practice Mindful Breathing

Concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply for a few minutes. This helps you regulate your breathing, reduce tension, and calm your mind. It’s a great way to reduce stress, anxiety, and nervousness.

Practice Muscle Relaxation

Scan your body and focus on tensing and relaxing each muscle group from head to toe. This helps you release any muscle tension, a great way to relieve stress and anxiety.

Write in a Journal

Write about your feelings and what’s been on your mind lately. Writing can help you identify your feelings, thoughts, and concerns. It’s a way of processing your emotions and can help improve your mental health.

Savor a Moment

Take a break to notice the beauty around you. Find something in your environment that brings you joy, and savor it for a few minutes. This can be anything from a flower, a bird, or a beautiful view. It will help you shift your focus to the positive and can improve your overall mood.

Reach Out to a Friend

Take the time to connect with a friend or family member, even just a quick text or phone call. Social support can help improve mood and lower symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Mental health is vital, and taking five minutes to check in with ourselves each day or week can go a long way in helping us lead healthy, happy lives. Incorporating mental health checks into our daily routine can help us avoid slipping into depression and anxiety and promote self-awareness.
